I run my rattery out of my home, in a converted garage. The walls are insulated and dry walled, I have two ceiling fans and two bright big windows to let in the sun. The floor is concrete for easy sweeping of the mess rats always seem to make. Not eveyone will like my set up and that is okay. I find this set up to the best for fossorial rats and easy for me to sanitize and clean, keeping the rats happy and healthy
My bins have both the top and front cut out of them replaced with wire mesh to ensure proper ventilation. Water bottles are easy to see and hoppers for food hang from the top lid giving them all the floor space in each bin. Depending on the bin, each bin has houses, play things such as tp tubes and chew sticks or hanging bird toys which are great for rats. Maternity bins may not have hides if moms chose not to use them.
